The Summer ‘20 fashion forecast calls for several fun styles to sport while splashing around: bold prints, unique silhouettes and—of course—COVID-inspired designs. Despite the overwhelmingly somber undertones of today’s world, the most popular designs of the season are bold and bright, a fashionable echo of our strength and perseverance as a nation. See below for some of the top trends to show off during your next swim sesh.

Tri-kini

Slay social distancing in style with this quarantine-friendly design, complete with a bikini top, bottom and matching face mask. “Beaches can be super crowded, so a bikini and face mask set is always a good idea,” asserts fashion designer Pnina Tornai. “Matching sets have been trending for some time, so it would only be natural to extend that to swimwear and have your mask match your bikini. Just because you need to practice extra precautions doesn't mean you can't do so in a fashion forward way that allows you to look and feel good.” Additionally, tri-kinis are often a sustainable option: “Designers are taking extra fabric from the bathing suit to make masks,” says celebrity stylist Ali Levine. “It’s a fun, eco-friendly way to add some flair to your beach look.”

One-shoulder

Showing off a single shoulder has never been so chic—and now it’s your turn to try the trend. “A one-shoulder bikini top can make for complicated tan lines, but the look is so modern and flattering on all bodies and shapes, it’s worth it,” declares Allyson Justice Longshore, personal stylist and founder of Style Studio Live. Most designs can double as a bodysuit as well, making it easy to transition from an afternoon BBQ to an evening campfire. “Simply throw some shorts or a skirt over the swimsuit, and you're ready for your next activity,” recommends LA-based fashion stylist Grace Butler.

Underwire Tops

This functional yet wearable design *definitely* deserves to be added to your bikini roster. “This style is a throwback that’s certainly coming in hot for Summer ‘20,” asserts Levine. “We’re seeing it in both two-piece and one-piece suits that are simple yet stunning.” Indeed, for those with larger cup sizes, this design provides the perfect support while staying stylish. “If you wear a bra size larger than a C, underwire is more than a trend—it’s imperative for a suitable swimwear top,” says Longshore. “A proper fit will always be in fashion.”

Velvet

This feel-good fabric not only looks luxurious, but it’s comfortable to wear when chilling poolside as well. “For the girl that already owns one of every swimsuit, a velvet design is a great addition due to its unique feel. It glistens under the sun!” exclaims Wisconsin-based personal stylist Hannah Rupp. Although it may not seem like an ideal material to sport under the blazing sun, it can actually serve as a high-fashion upgrade to your post-pool ensemble. “The contrast of this rich fabric with a beach setting is a beautiful combination,” Tornai asserts. “A velvet, one-piece swimsuit with a pair of denim shorts or sarong can easily take you from the beach to the boardwalk.”

Animal Print

Take a walk on the wild side with this trend, featuring patterns that never seem to go out of style. “If you’re looking for a daring fashion statement, animal print is your friend right now,” declares Levine. “So many different types were featured on the runways, from tiger to crocodile to cheetah, and they look even more fun and sassier on swimsuits.” To pull off the look, be sure to accessorize carefully, as an excess of prints can come off as too ‘busy.’ “The neutral colors in animal prints go well with straw beach bags and hats,” suggests Tornai. “You could also have some fun with it and try a pair of sunglasses with colored frames for an added pop of color.”
