The Oscars 2019 Best Dressed List
Last night’s festivities featured breathtaking performances by Jennifer Hudson and Queen; an almost-kiss between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper; a victory for the cast of Green Book (Best Picture); and--of course--stunning red carpet ensembles. See below for Carrie’s Chronicles’ compilation of the top ten style statements of the evening that were worthy of Oscars themselves (in no particular order).
1. Billy Porter in Christian Siriano
The gender fluid performer defied gender norms in a tuxedo/gown hybrid. He and the designer worked closely to create the look, a celebration of authenticity and pure individuality to inspire the entertainment industry.
2. Constance Wu in Versace
Forget Oscar gold. The Crazy Rich Asians actress was a vision in a marigold, tulle gown reminiscent of Disney’s Belle.
3. Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
The best actress nominee stunned in a honeycomb-esque dress. The design--which took 712 hours to make--was adorned with pearls, sequins, and beads, hence why it was a red carpet favourite of the evening.
4. Jennifer Lopez in Tom Ford
The multi-faceted superstar turned heads in a long sleeve gown that created the illusion of a mosaic of cracked glass. The mirror technique was lush and luxurious, making for the ultimate disco ball-esque design.
5. Kacey Musgraves in Giambattista Valli
Musgraves may have been one of many sporting the pink ruffle trend, but that didn’t take away from how exquisite her avant-garde frock was. The tulle gown was a breath of fresh air, with a tiered skirt, flared sleeves, and bow brooch contributing to its it-factor.
6. Danai Gurira in Brock Collection
Not only did Black Panther take home multiple awards, but cast member Gurira’s red carpet gown was also victorious. The actress’s frock looked like an ultra-chic update of a Ferrero Rocher wrapper, adorned with a gold headband and earrings to solidify style stardom.
7. Gemma Chan in Valentino Haute Couture
Just because Crazy Rich Asians lacked a nomination did not mean that Chan couldn’t make her mark on the red carpet prior to the awards ceremony. The neon pink gown with a dramatic train and front pockets was a clear showstopper.
8. Emilia Clarke in Balmain
Clarke shined in a metallic lilac frock with a sculptured bodice. The form-fitting design perfectly flattered the Game of Thrones actress’ figure, pairing perfectly with her new, brunette ‘do.
9. Michelle Yeoh in Elie Saab Haute Couture
The Crazy Rich Asians cast member defined regality in an off-the-shoulder crin-based gown, embroidered with lurex thread and light blue sequins. Topped off with Chopard and Richard Mille jewelry, the ensemble had onlookers bowing down in awe.
10. Glenn Close in Carolina Herrera
The Best Actress nominee took to dressing like the Oscar statue itself in a glittering, caped dress. The garment--which weighed 42 pounds and was covered in four million beads--certainly struck gold.
