Sophie Pecora Drops Self-Love Anthem “Devil”

Unique musical artist Sophie Pecora showcased her viral vocals on America’s Got Talent in 2019—and she has not slowed down since. The 16-year-old made her mark on the reality competition series for her original music, receiving the golden buzzer from Brad Paisley during Judge Cuts. Each melody she played was based upon her personal experiences as a teen—and the inspiration behind her latest single, “Devil,” is no different. Wielding a guitar and powerful vocals, Pecora is ready to conquer the next few months of the coronavirus pandemic with an authentic, heartfelt EP soon to be released. Below, the singer hints at what to expect in her upcoming tunes.

How would you describe the style of your music?

My music’s primary genre is pop, but I focus on storytelling, and my rap/poetry style adds a different flare.

How did your experience on America’s Got Talent help you grow as a singer?

America's Got Talent was a great experience. I’d never performed on a big stage like that before, and it made me realize how much I loved it. After my live performance at the Dolby Theatre, I remember thinking that I wanted to do a whole concert there. One song just felt like a warm-up. I would have performed 20 songs if I could have. It was so much fun!

Who/what is the inspiration behind your latest release, “Devil?”

I didn't have an idea in my mind for the song before I sat down and started writing it. These lyrics came to mind: "Grow up sometime / You turned into a monster, but you're in disguise.” I'm not sure where the words came from, but that happens with most of my songs. I just sit down, start freestyling and let whatever’s in my subconscious that day come out. I really enjoy creating stories, so I knew where I wanted the rest of the song to go from the first line.

What’s the main message behind the song?

“Devil” is a story about a toxic relationship and how someone found the strength to get out of their situation. All of a sudden, the other person wanted them back, but they had too much self-respect, so they wouldn't let that happen. I hope people can learn that it's okay to let others go if they’re not treating you like you deserve. I thought the song would be something that people could relate to, and if they're angry at someone, they could blast the song in their car and let it all out.

What was it like producing an EP amid the pandemic?

Luckily, I got in the studio for producing sessions right before the pandemic shut things down. I recorded the vocals and guitar at home for one song, though, in my dad’s walk-in closet, which is our little at-home studio. We sent the tracks to the producer, and he finished it up. During the last few months, I've mostly been working on social media content. I’ve been preparing for the song releases while also trying to balance school and stay happy and healthy during this strange time. A lot of original plans with my music have changed because I can’t perform live right now. I’m in the same boat as many other artists, and I just try to stay positive.

What else can supporters expect to hear in your EP?

People can expect to hear some songs they may recognize and that I've posted online in the past couple of years. Except in this EP, the songs are finished and produced in a way that really captures their mood and meaning. I’m especially proud of how the last song in the EP turned out. Wait and see! I think people are going to love it.
