Ruby Jay’s New Song, “SIKE,” Depicts Love and Letting Go

Pop artist Ruby Jay just released a new single, “SIKE,” but don’t read into the title too much—the teen meant every lyric she penned. One of her most personal tunes to date, “SIKE” gives listeners a glimpse into a toxic relationship and what the singer learned from the experience. Unlike her traditional anthems or ballads, Jay’s latest song contains soulful, R&B undertones, paired with a pulsating backbeat. Below, the 15-year-old singer and actress (she also appears on CBS’ The Unicorn and Hulu’s Holly Hobbie) dives into the production process.

Who or what inspired “SIKE?”

“SIKE” is definitely inspired by a “who,” but the "what" is a situation where a guy was totally leading me on. He wasn’t able to decide what he wanted. After two months of this game he was playing, where he kept me on the side, I was finally just like, “Hey, dude, I'm out.”

How does the song differ from previous ones you’ve released?

It’s definitely different from any of my previous songs. Not only does it have a more mature concept, but the vibe and music itself is more chill and in the pocket. That’s the type of song I want to keep creating.

How would you describe the style of your music?

A chilled-out melody with an awesome beat backing it. Think H.E.R. meets Bazzi.

What was it like producing “SIKE” in the age of COVID?

To be completely honest, I wrote "SIKE" with Finn Matthews around two years ago in his loft home studio, and I recorded it there before COVID. The only part that was done during COVID was the finessing of the music itself by Solomon Rodney.  Then, "SIKE" was mixed and mastered by the amazing Lynniah Herron.  One unfortunate side effect of COVID is that it’s not as easy to film a music video. Hopefully, we can do one soon!

What’s the main message behind “SIKE” that you hope listeners will take away?

The song was written to get all my thoughts on paper and turn them into an art form. I hope listeners can relate to the song, and that it encourages them to do the same thing I did if they’re in a similar situation. Don't ever let someone put you on hold.

What kind of music can people expect from you in the future?

Get ready for a lot more of this new style of music! It's my favorite pop style, and I’m so happy that I’m finally creating it.
