5 Ways to Style Your Loungewear

Life in quarantine has allowed for loungewear to take center stage as the hottest trend of the spring. Indeed, since no responsible fashionista will leave the house during these troubling times, we must resort to comfortable sweatsuits to show off our personal style indoors. Luckily, with loads of Instagram bloggers serving as inspo (Arielle Charnas, Danielle Bernstein, and more), styling the ultimate chill-at-home look is easier than ever. Check out the following five tips on how to up your indoor fashion game.

Start with a basic cotton tee.

Cotton tees are a staple of loungewear, produced in a cozy, versatile fabric ideal for cuddling up on your couch. Stock up on all the neutrals—white, gray, beige, and pastels–for endless styling opportunities. “A white tee is a blank slate that you can shape your outfit around,” says Sammy Watts, stylist and personal shopper for Alice + Olivia. “However, when wearing a neutral top, you should make your outfit pop somewhere else. Printed joggers or leggings are always a cute option.”

Find comfy bottoms.

The key to assembling a proper loungewear look is the addition of comfy bottoms. Leggings and sweatpants can be worn at all times—even out in public—and paired with a simple tee or cardigan that Instagram will adore. “Joggers are huge at the moment as well,” Watts explains. “Alice + Olivia’s Pete Pant comes in a variety of colors and prints and features a comfortable elastic waist.

Layer your look.

Summer may be around the corner, but chilly temps are still prominent in certain areas. Add a sweatshirt to your outfit to appear casual chic, or get your hands on a blazer for an air of sophistication. “I love to layer tees with an oversized cardigan, or even underneath overalls,” Watts asserts. “A plain tee paired with a kimono and leather leggings is the ultimate layered look that’s perfect for your current lifestyle.

Keep your feet cozy.

Ditch the novelty socks and opt for something more put-together, such as slip-on sandals or moccasin slippers, to top off your look. “Go ahead and rock slippers or slides indoors!” Watts exclaims. “When you’re going out to get fresh air, throw on a comfy sneaker to enhance your look.” Once you’re back inside, you can even try making your own crochet house slippers to keep your toes cozy.

Add accessories.

Chunky necklaces may be great for a night out, but it’s best to accompany your loungewear with lighter jewelry such as a beaded necklace or cute ring (Moon Magic makes a variety of affordable rose quartz rings). “Any hoop earring is an effortless accessory,” Watts suggests. “Plus, nameplate necklaces are always timeless and delicate to sport.” Your boss will certainly appreciate you dressing to impress while working from the comfort of your own home.
