Everything’s Coming Up Ruby Rose

Thirteen-year-old Ruby Rose Turner’s rise to stardom has only just begun. A talented singer and dancer, Turner began her professional career at age seven on Univision's longest running TV show Sabado Gigante. She participated in dance competitions for four years, winning several National Champion Award titles before taking her talent to the small screen. Turner performed on ABC's Dancing with the Stars in the live performance of "It's a Hard Knock Life" from the movie Annie, and she starred as young Julianne Hough in the "Move-Beyond" tribute performance with Julianne and Derek Hough. The teen acted in numerous television shows as well—taking on the role of Joey Gladstone's oldest daughter Phyllis on Fuller House and guest starring on ABC’s black-ish—before receiving her breakout role: Cameron (Cami) Wrather on Disney Channel's family sitcom Coop & Cami Ask the World. The series was recently renewed for a season two, and in addition to the show, Turner is working on Disney Channel’s first-ever IGTV series Ruby’s Gems starring her, her real-life family, and some of her cast members from the show.  She also recently took a step into the fashion world, launching a new, whimsical spring bag line “B. Rosy by Ruby Rose Turner.” With more projects on the horizon than ever before, Turner is certainly ready to take the entertainment industry by storm.

How did you first get into acting?
I started out as a competition dancer and just focused on my training. From there, I did a lot of dance jobs and acted in a lot of television commercials. After that, I started getting more opportunities to audition for TV shows, and I was really excited when I started getting callbacks for opportunities that I really wanted. I kept working really hard, stayed focused, didn’t let the rejections frustrate me, and finally, I booked my dream role! Being a huge Disney Channel fan growing up, one of my dreams was to be on one of those shows, so it's really cool to be doing that now.

What actors or actresses inspire you?

Kiernan Shipka, Joey King, Lupita Nyong'o are just a few that inspire me! I have so many!

What was it like working with the cast of Fuller House?
Working on that set was a great experience for me. Most of the cast has been together for over 30 years and they really act like a family in real life too. I couldn't believe it. It was so much fun and everyone was so welcoming and helpful. I had the best time.

What was the audition process like for Coop and Cami Ask the World?
The audition process happened over a few months. When I first read the script, I instantly loved Cami. She was tough, confident, and driven, and I loved that! Over the summer, they kept calling me back to read for her, and every time I felt that I was getting closer and closer. They auditioned so many girls for that role. I knew it was a long shot of booking it, but I never gave up.

Where were you and how did you react when you found out you were cast as Cami?
I was home, and my manager came to my house with a bunch of balloons. There were so many balloons that I couldn’t even see her when we opened the door! Haha...it was a really cool day for me.

Any memorable behind-the-scenes moments you can share?
Oh, gosh, there are so many, but I think finding out that I booked the role of Cami and filming the pilot right around my 12th birthday. Another special moment for me was celebrating my 13th birthday on set while filming season one. They brought out a cake and the cast and crew sang to me.

What or who inspired you to launch your handbag line, “B.Rosy?”
Designing is just another creative outlet for me. When I had the opportunity, I mentioned some of my inspirations, and one of those was Betsey Johnson because her style is so colorful and fun. She was a big influence on the designs.

How does your collection differ from other handbag collections?
It‘s vegan and cruelty-free. That was important to me. The bags are really fun to wear and make me happy.

What are your future plans?
More music, and more Coop & Cami!

This or That:

Beauty or fashion? Both.
Bags or shoes? For now, bags.
Acting or dancing? Acting, but I’ll always love dancing.
Ice cream or cupcakes? Ice cream.
Hawaii or Bora Bora? Hawaii.
